FRANKTASTIC WIN TO MASTERS

Greensb 3.8 lt SthnSts 11.9

A first quarter goal by Ronnie Frank sparked the team to perform and they never looked back – they lead at all the breaks. What we expected was a dropped mark in the goal square by the Ronnie (the Saints first year player). However he positioned himself well and was heavily infringed. The umpire showed no hesitation in awarding the forward pocket a kick for goal at the top of the square. Billy O ensured that Ron’s body was facing towards the goals (and not the point post). Once he calmed down - a goal was slotted.

What was Ronnie Vermin (coach) thinking when he wanted to start him on the bench???

Johnny Aquilla kicked many goals on the run (four we think) and stamped centre half forward/ HF as his turf.

The highlight of the match was the talking amongst players on the field. Clear instructions of “Ronnie – tap it” as ball was tapped to Johnny for a goal on the run. “Ronnie – handball” ensured Rob Leon got a goal on the run.

Thanks to General for helping out – the Masters had the twin towers combination of General and Ronnie V. Mick was injured – but played the game out. Tremendous effort. Ronnie V’s game plan was followed to the word and everybody contributed.

Special mention was made of the excellent contribution by the centre half back by the coach in the post match conference. Great game Brad.

In fact the defence only conceded 3 goals. Most attacks were repelled before hitting the full forward area.

It was great to see Scotty Bayes at the game and Simmo as the runner.

Over 47’s

Well there was an enormous lead up to Sunday’s big game - Saints versus Geelong. However despite all the press, we found we only had 19 players at the start of the game, and missing were the likes of Riewoldt and Koschitzke.

However, we were not overly concerned, as we knew we had the talents of Neophitou, Fitzsimmons and Egan at hand.

From the opening bounce we were under pressure from the taller and bulkier (read ‘fatter’) Geelong side, but despite persistent forward moves, they were unable to convert. Southern Saints on the other hand, were able to make the most of our foray’s forward, with first gamer, ‘Youngy 2’ (the more accurate one!), racking up possessions and slotting through majors.

The game continued on a fairly even keel after the first quarter, with neither side able to really take control. The umpires, obviously quite distressed about this, came out firing in the last quarter, and proceeded to completely decimate the Saints. As the rain began to fall, Geelong managed the greasy ball better, and were able to peg back a 10 point 3 qtr time lead to come out winners by about 8 points at the final bell.

After a painful loss to Gippsland, this was another really disappointing result. We were well below our best on the day, and I’m determined that we will raise the bar in 2 weeks time against the undefeated Footscray.

Let’s all get to training.

Our next Home Game is July 19th and our opponents on the day are Footscray....should be a great day for the club and always a quality contest...

What we would like to do is encourage having as many of the partners of the players attend as possible. This includes partners of both clubs which is a tradition of the club.

The club will have an excess supply of Chicken/Champagne etc however, we do ask that those attending bring along a small (disposable) platter and some Champagne if that is their choice.

As always, we welcome as may kids as possible to join us and I'm sure we will have a fun range of activities for them as well.

We will be communicating more on this later (closer to the day) but we do ask that you pass this mail onto your partner and encourage them to join us.

If anyone has any questions, please contact Shanan Jarvis on email...shananj @bigpond.com
