Southern Saints 2009 Season Newsletter
Round 8
SOUTHERN SAINTS V MARCELLIN / Brunswick
2 August 2009
Supers over 35's
SthnSts 3.6 lt Marcln 15.12
Not a good day at Bentleigh with the Southern Saints looking to avoid
relegation. Marcellin lead all day and had hads several ex-AFL players
amongst their ranks being Paul Broderick and seemingly many Dimmattina's.
At half time the Saints were against it. General was looking for Geeza
to control the backline. Bartlett to kick long and Scotty
Bayes (back from injury) to keep improving. JB and Skins were to provide
the drive from the half back line.
At the 3/4 time break the message was simple - avoid a blowout as the
percentage may be a factor (relegation). Jason Bamert got a mention
at the break for his excellent efforts to date.
The only last quarter highlight was Billy Durham coming on for what
would be his third match of the day. A herculian effort!!! Only
one thing - Billy lined up to kick towards the Marcellin goals (thus
his going back to take his kick looked like a playing on effort).
Goals: Bamert Reidy and Mick O'Neill
Post match special mention was made of:
JB - great effort all day
Rob Bartlett
Mick O'Neill
Mick
Also Harvs from Marcellin came to the Saints rooms and thanked the boys
for the game. He stated that they always enjoyed playing against Southern
and wished them the best to stay in division 1.
The General asked all to look at the next (and last match) versus Diamond
Valley. Only 2 training sessions left - so let's all be there.
Masters over 40s
SthnSts 7.7 d Bruns 5.9
Led by a fearless captain in Billy O the Saints recorded their fifth
(5) win of the season in this round 8 clash. Co ming
off a large loss in round 7 it was up to the boys to bounce back.
In what was a close match all day Southern managed a 10 point win.
Coach Ronnie V ensured that all were aware of their roles. This was
the set up for another team effort and that man again Billy playing
his second game for the day.
Best players:
Dave Phelan , Nathan , Rob Leon , John Boy and Scott Marsden
Goal kickers:
Scotty 5 , Brad and Rob Leon 1 each (probably assists from Scotty )
Over 47s
SthnSts 8.11 d Bruns 3.5
Not since Round 1 have the Saints played at home in the 047s. What ensured
was a 36 point win over an undermanned Brunswick.
Billy Durham was heard to remark on his form ..."i'm so hot at the moment
that I will get picked in the Masters..and the Supers." Guess what..he
was right.
Before the game Brunswick pulled off the recruiting coup of the season
by snaring the services of the much travelled Pepe and Ronnie Frank.
Their ploy of not having enough players worked.
However by going for a youth policy on the day they missed out on Billy
Durham.. and he 'terminated' them by running rampant all day.
Others that helped Billy included George at full forward and the silky
skilled Neil.
Thanks to Willow for goal umpiring.

D's Over 47’s Match Report
The day was fine, but windy. Jeez, was it windy, and Southern Saints
landed the task of kicking into this wind in the first quarter.
We started well, winning the ball out of the centre, courtesy of our
6’4” ring in, Simon “Doc” Nieson, who was winning everything in the
ruck... Mickey O was leading by example and putting his head over the
ball with great courage. Managing to push the ball forward with run
and handball, a new goal sneak was revealed, in Tony Boemo, who quickly
had 2 majors on the board before Brunswick knew what had hit them.
Our second quarter with the breeze was not as fruitful as we would have
liked, as we wasted opportunities with some poor skill errors. However
we did come in at the long break with a handy lead, and Brunswick yet
to register on the score board.
3rd qtr saw us kicking into that howling wind again, and also saw the
highlight of the day. In what most of us thought was a one off against
Footscray, we saw Joffa handball (in the forward line) to Stevie
Oakley who slotted a magnificent goal. (what were you doing in the forward
line Stevie?)
This week, we saw Joffa prove that it was no accident, when again he
handballed (in the forward line) to Hoges, who spotted up Wayne
with a sizzling short pass. Wayne finished truly rewarding the team
play, and Southern Saints pushed further ahead.
Unfortunately, at around this point in the game, I copped a knock on
the back of the scone, and I have very little memory of the rest of
the day.
Southern Saints ran out comfortable winners in the end 0.8.11 – 59 to
1.2.2 – 23
It certainly wasn’t our best football, made worse by the difficult conditions,
but it was good to get back on the winners list for a change.
Big game next against Diamond Valley. Let’s finish the year off with
a win!
Special Thanks to Ronnie Frank and Pepe who were
-
Good enough to pull on a jumper for Brunswick to help them out with
numbers
·
-
Not SO good as to upset the result of the game.

Southern Saints Master Chef competition
Round 1
The over 47's stunned us all last night with their surprising performance
in Round 1 of the Southern Saints Master Chef competition. For those
not present the menu was: Main course: lightly marinated and skewered
chicken pieces, barbequed sausages served with baby potatoes baked
with garlic, fresh salad and crusty bread. Desert: Fresh fruit salad
(very popular with the judges). Followed by cheese and biscuits
(even more popular with the judges). Impressive? YES! This fantastic
meal was served at a cost of only $10 per member and included a
free beer, wine or soft drink. The kitchen was spotless at the end
of the night and more importantly the club did not lose out (I believe
a profit was made). Supers are up next week in what promises to
be an exciting evening of fine wining, dining and mate ship. So,
get along and support the Southern Saints Master Chef competition
as it moves into round two. To the Over 47's, Great performance!
You will be hard to beat. (here
we were expecting lambs fry and dinner to be at 4.30pm!!!!!!!)
